Here we go again!
This time it's RITA! She was born a hurricane just days ago, but already she's grown to the third most powerful ever! And she's still growing! Will she pass the 1935 storm, or Hurricane Gilbert? God only knows!
What is certain is that the poor souls along the Texas Gulf Coast should get out of Dodge now! This one can be as bad or worse, than the 1900 Unnamed Hurricane that totally destroyed Galveston (http://www.deadlystorms.com/storms/1900/1900%20Galveston/index.htm).
Our heart goes out to these unfortunate people who have so much to loose. If ever there could be said to be a bright spot in the face of so much darkness, it is this: The authorities at the local, state, and Federal levels are all committed to being there and ready right after the storm! The local authorities especially, deserve commendation for getting the message out load and clear - first through the voluntary evacuation early on, and then the mandatory evacuation of the City and Island of Galveston.
Even with so clear a threat, there are always suicidal fools - fortunately, unlike in the case of Katrina and New Orleans - these fools are not the mayor, nor city government, and are only risking their own lives and those of their family. Yesterday, we saw on the news a woman on Galveston Island, who said she would "ride out the storm" with her young children. This is a death wish! Is this idiot so ignorant of the area's history with hurricanes? My hope and desire, is that state officials will keep a copy of the tape, and if by some chance, she and her children survive, that they arrest her for reckless endangerment of her children!
Let us hope that this storm fizzles out before coming ashore, but I fear that will not be the case!
The best of luck to y'all in Texas and Western Louisiana!
